A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machine which is quite like a forklift. It enables the driver to use forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain items, and this feature is something the forklift does not provide. Usually, order pickers are operated by electricity. These kind of equipment are mainly utilized in a warehouse environment. Most often they are used for moving pallets and doing specific tasks in the shelving and stocking department.
The order picker operator uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting which usually sits fairly close to the ground. The operator could direct the machinery to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades could be raised to the required level that makes it convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the materials needed, are located on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then whole platform is capable of being lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, some companies may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker is also able to put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be utilized to finish these specific jobs at some companies instead.
