Operating a lift truck is far more complex compared to driving a vehicle. A forklift driver must be really skilled and trained in using a forklift. Operating a lift truck requires a high level of concentration. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reports that 85 individuals die in accidents related to forklifts per year. Roughly 35,000 individuals are injured every year in lift truck accidents. Nearly 50% of operator deaths are caused by a lift truck tip over.

Drivers need to be able to accurately estimate load weights in order to prevent the machine from tipping over. The load weight in construction settings would often be posted on the load. If the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks and a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, the whole load weight would be approximately 1,360 kilograms. When a load is wet, the operator should take additional weight into consideration.

It is not safe for operators to make poorly informed guesses about the real load weight and whether the lift truck could handle it. If an operator could not be sure regarding the load weight, he must ask for assistance from the supervisor.

Another cause of tip overs is failure to pull up near enough to a building to place or lift a load utilizing an extended boom. It is important to utilize the load chart to prevent tipping the forklift. Even when a lift truck does not really tip over, a mishap has occurred whenever the back wheels come off the ground. This means the forklift limitations have been exceeded. Even if damage may not be obvious, the back axle could have been broken when hitting the ground.

It is also possible for lift trucks to tip even when not carrying a load. Unloaded lift trucks could tip just after a driver has positioned a load on scaffolding using an extended boom. If the driver reverses the lift truck and suddenly turns while bringing the boom down, the forklift's center of gravity would be pushed to the edges and a tip over could occur. A driver must always use the joysticks to lower and retract the fork.
