Selecting Between Cushion & Pneumatic Tires
Forklift tires contribute a lot to your machine's handling and safety features, as well as impacting maintenance expenses. The kind of forklift will determine to a large extent the kind of tire because the majority of forklifts are made with a particular frame that accepts only a specific type of tire. It helps to understand the properties of both pneumatic and cushion tires before selecting a tire.
Instructions
1 Check your forklift owner guidebook for specifications about tires. Most likely your forklift would function either on pneumatic tires or cushion tires. This would limit your options to the type of tire for which the forklift frame is made.
2 Check the kind of forklift. Electric pallet jack trucks and electric forklift trucks generally are built to use cushion tires which do not require much friction. Pneumatic tires are usually for forklifts which are powered by liquid propane gas or diesel.
3 Make sure you know what type of terrain you would be utilizing the forklift on. Soft cushion tires are made for even terrain whilst pneumatic tires are suitable for rough terrain. Cushion tires, if utilized on uneven ground, could cause the forklift to get stuck as they are set lower. Pneumatic tires perform well on packed stones, crushed concrete and gravel but not on potholed surfaces and very rough terrain.
4 Make sure you know the space limitations. Forklifts utilized mostly indoors have to be able to pivot in limited spaces. Cushion tires really work better than pneumatic tires in those kinds of conditions.
